Himachal Pradesh Election 2022: Himachal Pradesh is set to witness an assembly poll to elect 68 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The term of the 13th Assembly will expire on January 8, 2023, and the poll schedule for the election has already been announced by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar.

Himachal Pradesh Assembly Poll History
The first State Assembly in Himachal Pradesh was constituted in 1962 with Congress leader Yashwant Singh Parmar sworn in as chief minister. He led the Hill State People's Conference and led a movement instrumental in the creation of the Himachal Pradesh province in 1948.
Since 1962, Congress has been in power eight times. Janata Party formed the government in 1977. The Bharatiya Janata Party has been in power four times including the current dispensation.

2017 Assembly Poll Result
In the 2017 Himachal Pradesh assembly election, the BJP won 44 out of 68 seats and formed the government. The Congress was ousted from power as it managed to gain only 21 assembly seats. Besides these two parties, CPI(M) secured one seat while two independent candidates won two Vidhan sabha seats.
After the BJP won in Himachal Pradesh, it appointed Jai Ram Thakur to become the Chief Minister of the state.
