Heingang Election Result 2022: Manipur Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nongthombam Biren Singh has won from his home constituency Heingang in East Imphal district, Manipur, by 18271 votes.
Biren Singh polled 24814 votes, while his nearest rival Pangeijam Saratchandra Singh polled 6543 votes, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). The Indian National Congress nominated Pangeijam Saratchandra Singh to run against Manipur's Chief Minister in the 2022 assembly elections in Manipur.
While he originally won this seat in 2002 as a member of the Democratic Revolutionary People's Party, he repeated his triumph in 2007 and 2012 under a Congress banner.
The former footballer switched allegiances to the BJP in 2016 and won his seat back in the Assembly election a year later, defeating Pangeijam Saratchandra Singh, who ran on a Trinamool Congress Ticket (TMC) ticket, by a margin of 1206 votes.
The total number of voters in the Heingang constituency in 2017 was 30,459. Out of which, 27264 voters voted in person at polling places or by postal ballot.
In February, the BJP indicated that incumbent Chief Minister N. Biren Singh will be the future Chief Minister of Manipur if the party regained power following the assembly elections.
Singh began his career as a footballer before joining the Border Security Force (BSF), where he competed for the squad in local games. He subsequently went into journalism, founding the Naharolgi Thoudang vernacular newspaper in 1992. He was the newspaper's editor until 2001.
