The counting for the 182 assembly sears in Gujarat will begin at 8 am to seal the fate of the AAP and the BJP.
Here are the seats to watch out for:
Ghatlodia – In 2017, this urban constituency in Ahmedabad city was won by the highest margin of 1.17 lakh votes. Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel was the winner, and he is seeking a second term from Ghatlodia, which was represented by former Chief Minister Anandiben Patel between 2012 and 2017.
Vadgam (SC) – Popular Dalit leader Jignesh Mevami won this in 2017. This Scheduled Caste reserved Vadgam constituency falls under the Patan Lok Sabha constituency. In the 2022 elections, Mevani is contesting as a Congress candidate, who is up against BJP’s Manilal Vaghela and Dalpat Bhatiya of the Aam Aadmi Party.
Viramgam (Ahmedabad) – BJP has fielded firebrand Patidar leader Hardik Patel from this constituency. Hardik Patel, who is one of the party’s star campaigners, switched from the Congress to BJP in June.
Gandhinagar South - Till date this constituency has witnessed two legislative Gujarat Assembly elections, in 2012 and 2017. The constituency has a majority population of Thakor, followed by Patidars and the third community is Dalits. OBC leader Alpesh Thakor of BJP is fighting from here while Congress has fielded Himanshu Patel, its spokesperson and Patidar leader, and the AAP has nominated Dolat Patel who is also a Patidar, in the 2022 Gujarat elections.
Jetpur (ST) Chhota Udaipur – This tribal-dominated constituency has BJP's Rajendrasinh Rathwa, the son of 10-time legislator Mohansinh Rathwa in the fray, while the Congress has given the ticket to Sangramisinh Rathwa, the son of party MP Naranbhai Rathwa.
Morbi: The recent bridge collapse killing over 135 people were killed has put the spotlight on this Patidar-dominated constituency. Due to the Patidar quota agitation, BJP's Kanti Amrutiya, a five-time MLA, lost to Congress' Brijesh Merja in 2017. After the Morbi tragedy, BJP has dropped sitting MLA Brijesh Merja and instead gave ticket to five-time MLA Kantilal Amrutiya.
Khambhalia: An interesting Assembly seat as AAP has fielded its chief ministerial candidate Isudan Gadhvi from the seat, which has the dominance of the Ahir community. The AAP is relying on the popularity of the former journalist to grab the seat.
Jamnagar North: BJP candidate Rivaba Jadeja is hoping to win her electoral debut in Gujarat’s Jamnagar North constituency. A Rajkot native, Rivaba is popularly known as cricketer Ravindra Jadeja’s wife. Rivaba will contest against veteran Congress leader Bipendrasinh Jadeja whose campaign is being managed by Ravindra Jadeja’s sister and the Congress women’s wing head Nainaba Jadeja.
Katargam: The candidate in focus from the Katargam constituency is Gopal Italia, who will be fighting this 2022 Gujarat Elections on AAP ticket. An influential Patidar leader, Italia, played a key role in the Patidar quota agitation in 2015. He previously worked as a clerk in a government office and was removed from the job after he hurled a shoe at a Gujarat minister in 2017.
All eyes will be on the Aam Aadmi Party when the counting of votes polled in the Gujarat Assembly elections begins on Thursday as the outcome will determine the fate of the Arvind Kejriwal-led party’s national ambition. Aiming to breach the BJP’s Gujarat bastion, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) fielded its candidate to contest all 182 assembly seats and carried out a high decibel campaign in the run-up to the polls in Gujarat. During the campaign, the party positioned itself and its national convenor Kejriwal as the sole challenger of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi respectively. The results of the high-stakes polls in Modi’s home state will determine whether the AAP could successfully elbow out the Congress as number two in the tally and emerge as the principal challenger of the BJP. The feat, if achieved, will also determine the role that Kejriwal would play in stopping the Modi juggernaut in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The ruling BJP in Gujarat is aiming for a straight seventh term in the state, with just hours left for counting of votes for Assembly elections held on December 1 and 5. It was a high-stakes three-cornered fight between the BJP, Congress and AAP. Political observers said the outcome will determine who captures the main opposition space in Gujarat. Exit polls have predicted a big majority for the BJP in Gujarat and if these projections are any indication, the saffron party is all set to retain power in the state for the seventh consecutive term and equal Left Front’s feat in West Bengal. For the BJP, a positive result will firm up Narendra Modi’s bid for a third consecutive term as PM in 2024. For the Congress, its role as the main challenger to the BJP is at stake and Thursday’s results will reveal if the party’s ‘silent campaign’ has cut ice with people, an observer said. Top leaders of the party were busy with the Bharat Jodo Yatra. For AAP, which carried out an aggressive campaign, Gujarat election is a chance to establish itself as a pan-national party and a challenger to BJP at the national level also. Emboldened by the victory in the Delhi municipal elections, AAP hopes that its welfare politics will be accepted by the people in Gujarat. The BJP battled anti-incumbency sentiments after 27 years of rule in the state as it faced the recent elections. Modi was the party’s trump card and the ruling party banked on Brand Modi containing the anti-incumbency factor.
