Elections 2022: Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, two states witnessing multi-cornered contests, witnessed polling on Sunday.


Polling took place for all 117 Assembly seats in Punjab while in Uttar Pradesh it was for 59 seats. In UP, elections are being held in seven phases, the third of which was held on Sunday.


The voting percentage on Sunday till 5 p.m. in the third phase Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh was 57.58% and 63.44% in Punjab, the Election Commission informed, as reported by news agency IANS.

Punjab Election 2022 — District-Wise Voter Turnout


The voting in Punjab began at 8 am and concluded at 6 pm.


In Punjab, over 2.14 crore electors were eligible to decide the fate of 1,304 candidates in the fray including 93 women and two transgenders.


According to the Punjab chief electoral office, an average voter turnout of 63.44% was recorded till 5 pm while voting ended at 6 pm, news agency PTI reported.


Gidderbaha Assembly segment recorded the highest turnout of 77.80% while Amritsar South seat recorded the lowest turnout at 48.06%.

Punjab has witnessed a multi-cornered contest with Congress, AAP, SAD-BSP alliance, BJP-PLC-SAD (Sanyukt) alliance, and Sanyukt Samaj Morcha, a political front of various farmer bodies, emerging as popular options for the voters to choose from.


Several prominent leaders were captured as they arrived at polling booths to cast their votes. The popular names include incumbent Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, former CM Capt Amarinder Singh, Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu, AAP CM candidate Bhagwant Mann, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, and more.


All parties expressed confidence in securing victory and forming their government in Punjab.


Interestingly, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Sidhu and SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia came face to face at a polling booth in Amritsar and exchanged brief pleasantries. Both leaders are giving each other a tough contest from Amritsar East seat.


Actor Sonu Sood was restrained from visiting polling stations in Moga, where his sister is contesting on a Congress ticket, after ECI received complaints that he was allegedly influencing voters. His vehicle was also impounded by police.


Other names who have cast their votes today include Shiromani Akali Dal patriarch Parkash Singh Badal; Punjab Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa; Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal; Education, Sports & NRI Affairs Minister Pargat Singh; Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu; Congress leaders Manish Tewari, Sunil Jhakhar, Akali Dal leaders Bikram Singh Majithia, Harsimrat Kaur Badal and more.


Prominent Faces In Fray


The prominent candidates who contested the election include Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, AAP's chief ministerial face Bhagwant Mann, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, former CMs Amarinder Singh, and Parkash Singh Badal, and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal.


Besides them, former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Punjab BJP chief Ashwani Sharma, Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia and former Union minister Vijay Sampla are also in the fray.


The high-pitched campaigning in Punjab involved several prominent names such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union minister Smriti Irani, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal.


In the 2017 Punjab Assembly Election, Congress had ended the SAD-BJP alliance's 10-year-regime by securing 77 seats. AAP managed to get 20 seats while the SAD-BJP had won 18 and two seats went into the kitty of the Lok Insaaf Party.


UP Election Phase 3 Polling | District-Wise Voter Turnout


In Uttar Pradesh, voting was held for 59 constituencies spread across 16 districts. As many as 627 candidates are in the fray in the third phase where over 2.15 crore people were eligible to vote.


The polling took place between 7 am and 6 pm. 


According to data shared by the Election Commission (ECI), the voting percentage at 5 pm was 57.58%, PTI reported.


According to PTI details, Lalitpur reported the highest turnout at 67.38% while Kanpur Nagar saw the lowest at 50.76%:

The voting on Sunday sealed the fate of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav contesting the Assembly election for the first time from Karhal seat. BJP's challenger against him is Union minister SP Singh Baghel.


Akhilesh Yadav's uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav, contesting from his traditional Jaswantnagar seat, was also in the fray in this phase.


The prominent political leaders who cast their votes on Sunday were SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav, Dimple Yadav, Shivpal Singh Yadav, Ramgopal Yadav, Congress leader Salman Khurshid, Uttar Pradesh BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh and state minister Satish Mahana.

In the 2017 elections, BJP had won 49 of the 59 seats while SP settled for nine. Congress got one seat, while Bahujan Samaj Party drew a blank.


Three phases of the seven phased polling for the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly have been completed. Polling for the remaining phases will take place on February 23, 27, and March 3 and 7.


The counting of votes for the five poll-bound states will take place on March 10.
