Election Results 2022: Two Chief Ministers, 5 Former CMs Among Heavyweight Candidates Who Bit The Dust

Assembly Elections Results 2022: Most of the current and former ministers of the Punjab government have lost the poll battle to the AAP candidates.

New Delhi: Two current and five former chief ministers were among several political heavyweights who bit the dust in the elections to the five states, losing from their respective bastions.

While BJP is set to retain power in four states, AAP took Punjab in a landslide victory, overthrowing the Congress.

Punjab Election Results 2022

Most of the current and former ministers of the Punjab government have lost the poll battle to the AAP candidates.

Punjab threw up a surprise as veteran politicians like Parkash Singh Badal, Amarinder Singh and Navjot Singh Sidhu was defeated by "giant slayer" AAP. In fact, for the first time in three decades, the Punjab Assembly will have no Badal family member.

Former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal lost the Lambi seat in Sri Muktsar Sahib district to AAP's Gurmeet Singh Khudian by 10,000 votes. His son Sukhbir Singh Badal lost the Jalalabad assembly to Jagdeep Kamboj from AAP by a margin of almost 30,000 votes.

Parkash Singh Badal's son-in-law Adaish Partap Singh Kairon also bit the dust in the Patti assembly seat in the Tarn Taran district to AAP's Laljit Singh Bhullar. 

Manpreet Singh Badal, Punjab's finance minister and Sukhbir Badal's cousin, lost the Bathinda Urban seat to AAP's Jagroop Singh Gill.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi lost from both Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur seats by margins of 7,800 and 37,220 votes respectively.

Both Bikram Singh Majithia, Sukhbir Badal's brother-in-law, and Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu lost to "giant killer" AAP's Jeevan Jyot Kaur in Amritsar East constituency.

Uttarakhand Election Results 2022

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami lost the elections from his bastion Khatima by over 7,000 votes. He was defeated by Congress' Bhuwan Chandra Kapri. Khatima was won by Dhami in 2017. Dhami had defeated Kapri that year by 2,700 votes.

A similar fate awaited former Uttarakhand chief minister and Congress veteran Harish Singh Rawat. Rawat, who had led the Congress campaign in the Uttarakhand assembly polls, lost to the BJP's Mohan Singh Bisht from Lalkuwa by 17,527 votes.

Colonel Ajay Singh Kothiyal, projected as the CM candidate by the Aam Aadmi Party, also lost from the Gangotri seat.

Uttar Pradesh Election Results 2022

Former Uttar Pradesh minister in the Yogi Adityanath government and Samajwadi Party candidate Swami Prasad Maurya lost from Kushinagar's Fazilnagar seat by 41,781 votes. The Fazilnagar seat was won by BJP's Surendra Singh Kushwaha.

The OBC leader joined the Samajwadi Party (SP) weeks ahead of the UP election. He had said he quit the BJP due to "gross neglect" towards Dalits, backwards, farmers, unemployed youth and small traders.

BJP leader and deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya lost to Samajwadi Party's Pallavi Patel by a margin of 7,337 votes.

Besides Maurya, Congress candidate Asha Singh, the mother of the Unnao rape victim, lost from Unnao constituency and managed to get only 1,544 votes. The seat was won by BJP's Pankaj Gupta, who bagged 1,26,303 votes.

Goa Election Results 2022

In Goa, former chief minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) nominee Churchill Alemao lost the election from Benaulim to the AAP nominee Capt Venzy Viegas.

The Aam Aadmi Party's chief ministerial candidate in Goa Amit Palekar also bit the dust in St Cruz seat. The seat was won by Congress candidate Rudolfo Fernandes. Palekar got 4,098 votes.

Independent candidate Utpal Parrikar, son of former Goa CM Manohar Parrikar, lost from Panaji by a slender 674 votes to BJP's Atanasio Monserratte.

Utpal Parrikar contested the election on his own after the BJP refused him ticket from Panaji which his late father and former chief minister Manohar Parrikar had represented in the past.
