CWC Resolution Acknowledges Congress's 'Disappointing Performance' In Some States, Calls For 'Urgent Steps'

The resolution also mentioned that the party acknowledged the "disappointing" performance in some states and has called for "urgent steps" necessary to be taken in the said direction. 

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge opened the extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in New Delhi, marking the party's first such assembly following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The CWC adopted a resolution that expressed gratitude to the party leaders and thousands of workers nationwide for their determination and hard work over the past year. The resolution also mentioned that the party acknowledged the "disappointing" performance in some states and has called for "urgent steps" necessary to be taken in the said direction. 

"The CWC would be failing in its duty if it did not take note of the disappointing performance of the Indian National Congress in some states in the midst of its overall revival and rejuvenation. Urgent steps should and will be taken to address the shortcomings in the states where the party had every reason to hope for a better result but where that expectation was not fulfilled," the grand old party stated in its resolution. 

The I.N.D.I.A bloc secured 233 seats. Others won 18 seats in the lower house of Parliament. The Congress secured 99 seats. Samajwadi Party obtained 37 seats, while Trinamool Congress won 29. 

The states where the party did not perform well include Union Territories like Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, and the BJP stronghold state of Madhya Pradesh, as well as Himachal Pradesh, where Congress had wiped out BJP in Assembly elections, and Andhra Pradesh, a state next to Telangana but far from Congress's reach.

People Gave Strong Rely To 'Dictatorial Powers': Kharge 

In his opening remarks at the CWC meeting, Kharge stated, "The public has given a strong reply to dictatorial powers and anti-constitutional forces by expressing faith in us. The voters of India have rejected the BJP's 10 years of divisive, hateful, and polarising politics". 

On behalf of CWC, Kharge also congratulated the newly elected Congress members of the Lok Sabha "who fought and won the elections in adverse circumstances".

Kharge also noted the party's improved performance among SC, ST, OBC, and minority voters, as well as in rural areas. However, he acknowledged the need for greater efforts to strengthen the party's influence among urban voters and to address underperformance in certain states where the Congress had previously succeeded in Vidhan Sabha elections but failed to replicate that success in the Lok Sabha.

"We will soon discuss all these things separately. We will also take whatever immediate steps are required," he said.
