Punjab Assembly Election Result 2022: Congress chief ministerial candidate Charanjit Singh Channi lost from the Chamkaur Sahib constituency by a margin of 4,000 votes.


He was defeated by his closest rival Charanjit Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Channi has got 50,000 votes, while Charanjit Singh managed to get 54,000 votes. 


In Bhadaur too, Channi was defeated by AAP candidate Labh Singh Ugoke by a comprehensive margin of 37,558 votes.


Chamkaur Sahib falls under the Rupnagar district and has been a stronghold of Charanjit Singh Channi. During the 2017 Punjab assembly election also Channi had defeated Charanjit Singh by a margin of 12,308 votes.


The Chamkaur assembly is a reserved seat and has an estimated Scheduled Caste population of 34.54 percent. 


The Congress had declared Charanjit Singh Channi as the chief ministerial candidate over Navjot Singh Sidhu after receiving feedback from party leaders and workers. The party had also sought an opinion of the public in this regard.


Election for the 117 member Punjab assembly was held in a single phase on February 20. The Election Commission had initially announced February 14 as the polling date, but it was rescheduled after demand by political parties seeking change in view of Guru Ravi Das Jayanti, on February 16.


A large population of Punjab, especially the schedule caste are firm believers of Guru Ravi Das and therefore visit Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh for weeklong celebrations to mark his birth anniversary. 


In the 2017 assembly elections Congress had bagged 77 seats and formed government in the state.
