Maharashtra Byelections Results — Chinchwad And Kasba Peth Assembly Segment

Counting of votes for the byelections to Kasba and Chinchwad Assembly constituencies in the Pune district will start on Thursday, March 2 from 8 am. The bypolls for the two seats held by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took place on February 26. The average voter turnout in both constituencies was 50 per cent. The elections were necessitated by the deaths of incumbent BJP MLAs Mukta Tilak (Kasba Peth) and Laxman Jagtap (Chinchwad).

The byelections have pitted the BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena against the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance of the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).

The main contenders in the Kasba Peth constituency are Hemant Rasane of the BJP and Ravindra Dhangekar of the Congress (backed by the MVA). In Chinchwad, the fight is between Ashwini Jagtap of the BJP, Nana Kate of the NCP and independent Rahul Kalate.

West Bengal Bypoll Result — Sagardighi Assembly Constituency

The bypoll to the Sagardighi assembly seat was necessitated by the death of its three-time TMC MLA and state minister Subrata Saha in December last year. The TMC, which has been winning the seat since 2011, won in 2021 by a margin of nearly 50,000 votes, securing more than 50 per cent of the total votes polled, whereas the BJP and the Congress-Left alliance had bagged 24 per cent and 19 per cent respectively.

Candidates of the ruling Trinamool Congress, the opposition BJP and the Congress-Left alliance are the main contestants. The TMC has fielded Debashish Banerjee, the BJP nominee is Dilip Saha, and the Left-supported Congress candidate is Bayron Biswas.

Voting was peaceful in the byelection to West Bengal's Sagardighi assembly constituency in Murshidabad district, where over 73 per cent of the 2.3 lakh voters exercised their franchise on February 27.

Jharkhand Byelection Result — Ramgarh Assembly Constituency

The byelection for the Ramgarh assembly seat was necessitated after the disqualification of Congress legislator Mamta Devi, following her conviction in a criminal case. The Congress has fielded Mamta Devi’s husband, Bajrang Mahto, from the seat while the AJSU Party has nominated its leader Sunita Choudhary.

Though 18 candidates, including 14 Independents, are in the fray, the contest would be mainly between the Congress, an ally of the ruling JMM-led coalition, and the AJSU Party, which has tied up with the BJP for the bypoll.

A voter turnout of over 67.96 per cent was on day of polling, Feburary 27, in the Ramgarh assembly constituency bypoll in Jharkhand.
