The panchayat election in West Bengal encompasses 63,229 gram panchayat seats, 9,730 panchayat samiti seats, and 928 zilla parishad seats spread across 22 districts. However, Darjeeling and Kalimpong follow a two-tier system with Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and Siliguri Sub-divisional Council occupying the top position.
Polling was conducted on Saturday, July 8, across over 61,000 booths in West Bengal for the three-tier panchayat elections. Following allegations of ballot box tampering and widespread violence that claimed the lives of at least 15 people, the State Election Commission ordered repolling on Sunday evening. Fresh voting took place on Monday, July 9, at 696 booths in 19 districts of West Bengal.
Following the repolling in certain booths in West Bengal, the leader of the opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of orchestrating false voting in thousands of booths during the recent elections. Adhikari claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had submitted a list of 6,000 booths to the State Election Commission (SEC) requesting re-election.
Adhikari alleged that the TMC was responsible for false voting in 18,000 booths and that more evidence was being collected to support these claims. He criticised the State Election Commissioner, Rajiva Sinha, for supposedly overlooking the BJP's list and accused the SEC of favouring the TMC by announcing a different list of booths for repolling.
"We will present detailed evidence, including video footage, to the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, the day of vote counting," Adhikari stated.
In response, Kunal Ghosh, the state general secretary of the TMC, shifted the blame onto opposition parties for the violence that occurred on election day.
"The TMC has been the most affected by this violence sponsored by the opposition. Despite requesting the presence of central forces, they did not arrive. Today's polling has been peaceful, which demonstrates that the SEC has taken steps to control the situation," Ghosh asserted.
