Guwahati: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday came down heavily on the “mysterious” silence maintained by the Congress over Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's “insulting” remarks against the grand old party.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, AAP Assam unit’s senior spokesperson Anurupa Dekaraja expressed surprise on the Assam Congress leadership remaining mute to CM Sarma’s claims that barring one, he can make all the Assam Congress candidates in fray for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, shift to BJP.

“It’s surprising that the leadership of the Assam Congress, which is the main opposition party in the state, did not react to CM Sarma’s insulting remarks against the party,” Dekaraja said.

Dekaraja questioned the Congress for being silent despite CM Sarma's “sensational” statement against the party.

"Is there really a secret understanding between the Chief Minister and the Assam Congress leadership," Dekaraja asked.

Dekaraja challenged Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah and other leaders of the party to clarify their stand. She said that during the 2021 Assam Assembly elections too, Sarma had claimed that candidates of Congress for the polls will be  upon his will.

“A similar statement this time again has made the alleged links between the Assam Congress and the BJP clear. If the Chief Minister’s claims are baseless, why has the Congress not stood against it,” she questioned”

Dekarja further said that the Chief Minister’s anti-democratic statement demeaning the main Opposition party in the state has left the AAP disappointed.

Chief Minister Sarma on Monday while campaigning in Southern Assam’s Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency said that there is no point in voting in favour of the Congress as their candidates, if elected, will defect to the BJP. The Chief Minister also claimed that that there is no Opposition in the state, as, if called to join the saffron party, their leaders will jump ship to BJP.
