Background

Puri: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Pinaki Misra from Biju Janata Dal (BJD) won the elections by a margin of 263361 votes. The polling / voting in Puri constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 3 on 23 April. The major contest is between Bharatiya Janata Party#s Sambit Patra and Biju Janata Dal#s Pinaki Mishra

Puri 2014 Lok Sabha Polls

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Biju Janata Dal won 20 out of the 21 parliamentary seat with 44.1 percent vote share while the Bharatiya Janata Party managed to win just 1 seats with a 21.5 percent vote share.

  • 2004 Lok Sabha Elections: In 14th Lok Sabha election, Biju Janata Dal candidate had defeated Indian National Congress candidate by a margin of 60960 votes BJD candidate Braja Kishore Tripathy had got 462248 while INC got Pinaki Misra votes.
  • 1999 Lok Sabha Elections: In 13th Lok Sabha poll, Biju Janata Dal candidate defated Indian National Congress candidate in one-sided contest. Here, BJD candidate Braja Kishore Tripathy attained 383060 votes and INC's Jayant Das bagged 251315 votes.
  • 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha election, Biju Janata Dal candidate had defeated Indian National Congress candidate by a margin of 52545 votes BJD candidate Braja Kishore Tripathy had got 358978 while INC got Pinaki Mishra votes.
  • 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated JD candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Pinaki Mishra attained 352837 votes and JD's Brajakishore Tripathy bagged 240529 votes.
  • 1991 Lok Sabha Elections: In 10th Lok Sabha election, JD candidate defeated Indian National Congress candidate with a difference of 38957 votes. Here, JD leader Braja Kishore Tripathy attained 275608 votes and Indian National Congress candidate Gangadhar Mahapatra bagged 236651 votes
  • 1989 Lok Sabha Elections: In Ninth Lok Sabha poll, JD candidate defated Indian National Congress candidate in one-sided contest. Here, JD candidate Nilamani Routray attained 367618 votes and INC's Brajamohan Mohanti bagged 228046 votes.
  • 1984 Lok Sabha Elections: In 8th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated JNP candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Brajamohan Mohenty attained 239019 votes and JNP's Ranjit Mohanty bagged 134579 votes.
  • 1980 Lok Sabha Elections: In 7th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated JNP(S) candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC(I) candidate Brajamohan Mohanty attained 201753 votes and JNP(S)'s Padmacharan Samantasinhar bagged 79950 votes.
  • 1977 Lok Sabha Elections: In Sixth Lok Sabha election, BLD candidate had defeated INC candidate by a margin of 70541 votes BLD candidate Padmacharan Samantasinhar had got 179802 while INC got Banamali Patnaik votes.
  • 1971 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fifth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated UTC candidate with a difference of 46777 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Banamali Patanaik attained 117354 votes and UTC candidate Padma Charan Samatasinhar bagged 70577 votes
  • 1967 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fourth Lok Sabha election, SSP candidate had defeated INC candidate by a margin of 59258 votes SSP candidate R. Ray had got 143901 while INC got B. Misra votes.
  • 1962 Lok Sabha Elections: In Third Lok Sabha election, interesting battle could be seen between Indian National Congress and HMS here Indian National Congress candidate defeated his HMS counterpart with a difference of 9939 votes.
  • 1957 Lok Sabha Elections: In Second Lok Sabha election, HMS candidate defeated INC candidate with a difference of 11679 votes. Here, HMS leader Brijnarain attained 92646 votes and INC candidate Pandviya Shayamlal bagged 80967 votes
  • 1951 Lok Sabha Elections: In India's Very First Lok Sabha Polls, interesting battle could be seen between Independent and INC here Independent candidate defeated his INC counterpart with a difference of 4646 votes.
