Tripura Government Schools Closed Till April 23 Amid Soaring Temperature

Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has announced that all government schools in Tripura will be closed till April 23 in the wake of intensifying temperatures in the state.

The Tripura government has announced the closure of government schools in the north-eastern state till April 23. The move from the state government comes following the rise in mercury levels in several parts of the country and heatwave alerts from the meteorological department. Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha took to twitter on April 17, to make the announcement. "The heat wave across the state may cause bad impact on health of the students. In this view, the state government has decided to keep all the government-run and grant-in-aid schools closed with effect from April 18, 2023 to April 23, 2023," read the Chief Minister’s tweet. 

Notably, in the past few days, temperatures have been on an unprecedented rise in several states across the country including Delhi, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, and others. The meteorological department too has cautioned about rise in temperatures in the coming weeks in several states. Following the heatwave forecast, states have swung into action with their respective measures and guidelines to ensure the safety of school-going children, who are more likely to be vulnerable to the scorching heat wave and heat strokes. 

On April 13, the Directorate of Education, Delhi, released a set of guidelines for all private and government schools in the state. The guidelines asked schools to ensure that no assembly is organised in the afternoon, all schools must have proper availability of drinking water, and students should be sensitised to protect themselves against the summer heat. 

In a similar move, the district administration of Bihar’s capital city ‘Patna,’ on April 14, asked all schools in the city to revise their operational timings. “The district administration prohibits the academic activities for all classes (including in pre-schools and anganwadi centers) after 11.45 am in all schools of the district. The school authorities are hereby directed to reschedule their timings of academic activities in conformity of the order. The order will come into force from April 15,” said the order issued by Patna district magistrate Chandra Shekhar Singh on Friday, news agency PTI reported.
