New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu government has cancelled the public exams for class 10 or SSLC and said that all students will be declared ‘pass’. The decision was announced by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.


The board exams which were earlier supposed to take place in March was postponed due to the nationwide lockdown. The government then decided to conduct the exam this month and the board exams were scheduled to begin from June 15. But a teacher’s association challenged the government decision and had filed a petition at the Madras High Court, due to the rising coronavirus cases in the state. According to a report by PTI, the government had informed that the selected date of the exam was the right time as experts' opinions published in news reports forecast Covid-19 cases in the state might rise up to two lakhs in coming days. However, the court was of the view that the lives of more than nine lakh students at stake and asked the government to consider postponement of the exams. Although no interim order was issued, the court on Monday had asked the government for a detailed report on the steps taken for the conduct of the examinations.

Tamil Nadu is among the states which have been severely affected by the coronavirus and it falls in the second position after Maharashtra. The data by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare shows that the state has a total of  33229 cases of coronavirus. Out of this 15416 are active cases. The state has so far recorded 286 fatalities due to COVID 19.
