UGC-NET is a test conducted to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for the roles of ‘Assistant Professor’ and ‘Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor’ in Indian universities and colleges. Since December 2018, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has been administering UGC-NET in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode.

The awarding of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/or Eligibility for Assistant Professorship is based on the candidate's overall performance in both Paper-I and Paper-II of the UGC-NET. Candidates who qualify solely for Assistant Professorship are not eligible for the JRF award. Those qualifying for Assistant Professorship are subject to the recruitment rules and regulations set by the respective universities, colleges, or state governments.
