The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Rankings 2025 are out and an IIT has emerged as the top institute in India. While the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US held on to its top spot in the rankings since last year, the University of Cambridge in the UK fell three ranks to bag the fifth spot. However, another UK university — the Imperial College London — replaced it at the second spot. The University of Oxford, too, retained its spot at number 3 in the global rankings.
Top 10 Indian Institutes On QS World Rankings List
In India, IIT-Bombay, took a giant leap from 149 last year to settle at 118 in 2025. IIT-Delhi, too, improved a lot to bag the 150th position, up from 197 last year. Indian Institute of Science came up third among Indian institutions, securing the 211th rank.

Indian School Of Mines Tops India’s List In QS University Rankings By Subject
The Indian School of Mines (ISM) University, Dhanbad, has secured the top spot among Indian institutions in the prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2025.
This year's edition features an impressive 79 Indian institutes, highlighting the country’s growing global academic presence.
ISM Dhanbad made a remarkable impact on the global stage, ranking 20th worldwide in Engineering – mineral and mining, making it India’s highest-ranked subject area. Following closely behind, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D) earned recognition in Engineering and Technology, while Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences made its mark in Dentistry, securing the 26th spot globally.
The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad also shone in the rankings, claiming 27th place in Business and Management Studies.
IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, and the University of Delhi each made 29 entries in the 2025 rankings, with IIT Bombay emerging as the most improved performer, seeing progress in 12 subject areas.
