NEET and JEE (Mains) 2020: The Supreme Court has dismissed the student petitions challenging the NEET and JEE exams that are supposed to begin from next month.  Earlier this month, 11 students from different states had filed a plea in the Supreme Court seeking the postponement of JEE (Main) April 2020 and NEET-Undergraduate examinations due to the rising Covid 19 cases in the country. The Supreme Court was supposed to hear the plea today but it has been dismissed instead.

Students in their petition have cited the worsening condition of the pandemic in the country for the deferment of the exams.

"Conducting the aforesaid examination across India at such perilous time is nothing else but putting lives of lakhs of young students (including petitioners herein) at utmost risk and danger of disease and death. The best recourse at this stage can be to wait for some more time, let COVID-19 crisis subside and then only conduct these exams, in order to save lives of the students and their parents," said the plea which was filed through advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava.

The students have also demanded an increase in exam centres in their petition. They also highlighted issues such as problems in the availability of computers and laptops and the Internet.

"It is respectfully submitted that the students who are well equipped with computers and strong internet connection will give online exams while on the other hand the students who are unable to give and arrange online exams, will have to come to exam centres by risking their lives. This is discrimination between students which must be avoided," it claimed.

But while students are fighting for postponement of the exams, a parent's body from Gujarat had filed a plea in favour of the exams.

A report by leading daily Hindustan Times says that Gujarat Parents Association has filed a plea before the Supreme Court asking that the exams be held according to schedule. The parents’ body says that cancellation of exams will lead to the loss of an academic year and impact their professional life. Similarly, a report by Bar and Bench has said that another group of parents has also filed pleas in support of the exams. The petitioners have said that ‘there an imminent need to stick to the second revised schedule issued by the NTA.’

There is a delay in the release of admit cards which were expected to be out by August 15. It is likely that the cards may be released today, August 17.
