Earlier, in a notification, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had informed schools and colleges to remain closed till December 31. In a fresh circular issued on Tuesday, the BMC said it decided to keep all --government and private -- schools and colleges closed till January 15 due to the second wave of COVID-19 in other countries and the situation in some states in the country.
Although the civic body mentioned that the pandemic situation is under control in the Mumbai municipal limits though. The BMC also allowed the American Consulate School and other consulate schools in the city to reopen from January 18, but did not specify when exactly other educational institutes can reopen.
Meanwhile the Maharashtra education department has is going to allow the resumption of classroom studies for class 5 to 8 students only after required approval for the same is given by the state health department, School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad said on Wednesday.
On November 23, the education department reopened more than 9,000 schools in various parts of the state such as Chandrapur, Solapur, Satara, Beed and Amravati, as per the Hindustan Times report. Schools have also witnessed the number of attendance increasing with the gradual reopening.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC’s) data the number of Covid-19 cases in Mumbai touched 292,008 and its death toll rose to 11,094. Mumbai on Tuesday reported 537 new cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) and six related deaths, the lowest single-day fatalities since May.
