In the wake of the ongoing heatwave in the state, the Jharkhand government has ordered further closure of schools in the state. In its latest circular, the School Education and Literacy Department, Jharkhand Government has ordered all schools in the state up to Class 8 to remain closed till June 17, 2023. Classes in all schools of the state for classes 9 to class 12 have been directed to remain closed till June 15. 


Notably, earlier on June 14, the secretary of the school education and literacy department, K Ravi Kumar issued a notification instructing all types of schools, including government, non-government aided/non-aided (including minority), and private schools operating in the state, to remain closed from June 12 to June 14. While mercury levels across the leverls are soarinf between 38 to 44 degree celcius, the meteorological departent has also hinted at light rains in some parts of the state. However, the light showers are unlikely to bring significant drop in the scorching heatwave.

With the onslaught of severe heat conditions across the country, several others states have also swung into similar action. The Patna district administration in Bihar too, released a cricular on June 12, imposed restriction on all types of academic activities in the district till June 18. Similarly, the Directorate of Education, Goa, (DGE Goa), also released a cicrular on June 10, 2023, announcing the closure of schools in the state on June 10, 2023. 


"Due to extreme heat and delay of the monsoons in the state, it is decided by the competent authority to close down all institutions on 10/06/2023. All the heads of Govt/Govt aided/unaided primary/middle/secondary/higher secondary and special schools are hereby requested to compensate for the academic loss in future, if any," read the circular from the DGE Goa.


Even today, the Chhatisgarh government also announced the closure of schools in the state till June 26. As per the Chief Minister's instructions, all schools in Chhattisgarh will remain closed until June 26 to protect students from the intense heat. The Chief Minister has issued clear instructions regarding this matter. Consequently, schools in Chhattisgarh will reopen on June 27.
