In a major development, the West Bengal Education Department has given its nod to the executive council meeting of the Jadavpur University, making way for the varsity’s convocation on December 24, 2023, news agency PTI reported an official as saying. The development emerges as a ray of hope for Jadavpur university’s convocation, which earlier had uncertainties looming over it after the government barred decision making bodies of the university, the executive council (EC) and the court, from convening meetings following the appointment of professor Buddhadeb Sau as the officiating vice-chancellor of the university without consulting the higher education department.

In a notice, the education department gave its nod to the EC and the court to convene its meetings, but with the sole purpose of discussing the convocation, and organising it, officials said. "...decisions so taken in the meetings shall have to be ratified by the regular vice-chancellor in terms of rule 3(6) of the West Bengal State Universities Rules 2019 whenever such regular VC is appointed," it was reported as saying.

While Vice-Chancellor Sau refrained from commenting on the matter, the Jadavpur University Teachers' Association welcomed the development. The approval follows state education minister Bratya Basu’s meeting with Sau and registrar Snehamanju Basu.

Earlier, the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) urged the West Bengal Education Minister to step in and facilitate the conduct of the annual convocation of the varsity in time, in the interest of students. In a letter to Education Minister Bratya Basu and Governor CV Ananda Bose, the JUTA general secretary Partha Pratim Roy underlined the convocation as an integral part of the long and glorious tradition of JU and one of the "most cherished" events of students.

"Considering the future and emotion of our students, we, on behalf of all the teachers of Jadavpur university, fervently request you to ensure that our students get their valid degrees and certificates in due time," the letter was quoted as saying.
