In an official order released today, the Delhi government has directed all schools in the national capital to run classes in the online mode, except for Class 10 and 12. The move from the Government of Delhi comes in the wake of the GRAP Stage-IV measures implemented in the national capital to combat air pollution. "In view of the implementation of Stage IV Graded Response Action Plan order issued by CAQM, it is ordered that all classes - except the Board Classes i.e. X & XII in all schools of Delhi shall be held online up to 10.11.2023," reads the official order.

“Teachers shall come to school & conduct classes online. As for the Board classes i.e. X & XII, the HoSs shall have the option either to conduct the same online or call the students to school for physical classes. HoSs to inform the parents about these arrangements immediately,” the order reads further.

Notably, with the rising air pollution, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has seen a severe drop in the national capital region. Delhi's air quality entered the 'severe plus' category due to unfavourable wind conditions, increased farm fires in north India, and other local pollution sources. In addition to all actions under Stage I, II, and III to prevent further deterioration of air quality in the region, The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Sunday decided to invoke Stage IV of the GRAP in the entire NCR with immediate effect, news agency PTI reported.

In the wake of the poor air quality in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister on Thursday, November 2, announced the closure of all schools in Delhi for the next two days. Earlier yesterday, Delhi Minister of Education, P.W.D, Culture and Tourism, Atishi, further announced the shutting down of all primary schools in Delhi through a post on x (formerly Twitter). “As pollution levels continue to remain high, primary schools in Delhi will stay closed till 10th November. For Grade 6-12, schools are being given the option of shifting to online classes,” she said.
