In the wake of flood-like situations in parts of the national capital Delhi, the Directorate of Education (DTE), Govt of Delhi, has advised schools in several districts of Delhi to take proper safety measures. The advisory comes after river Yamuna crossing the danger mark and entering various low-lying areas in Delhi. In a circular released today, July 13, 2023, the Delhi Government has asked several schools in North East, North, South East & Central districts to take appropriate safety measures. In its circular, the DTE Delhi has further asked schools in low-lying areas to remain closed with immediate effect, without any further orders.
“As waters of river Yamuna have crossed the Danger Mark and entered a few low-lying areas along the bank, especially in Districts East, North East, North, South East & Central, the Heads of all the Government, Government Aided & Recognised Private Schools in these Districts are hereby ordered to take adequate measures to ensure safety of the students,” reads the circular from the Directorate of Education, Delhi.
“All schools in low lying areas where there is an imminent danger of flooding must be closed with immediate effect without waiting for any further orders. Zonal & District authorities to remain in constant touch with these schools to provide support,” the circular further adds. Notably, the onslaught of severe monsoon rainfall in the past few days followed by water logging in several parts of the national capital and the Yamuna river crossing the danger mark and overflowing, Delhi is battling with flood-like situations causing chaos across the national capital.
With disruption in connectivity within the city with water-logging reported on several roads and streets, and in residential areas, the rising Yamuna water levels entering in some low-lying areas has only furthered the monson fury. Considering the present circumstances, local administrations have been on their feet to help protect children from the harsh weather by closing school operations temporarily.
Following the safety advisory by the DTE Delhi in the afternoon today, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) released an official order in the evening today, directing all schools under its administration to be closed till July 16. The Gautam Buddha Nagar district also released a circular today, directing all schools in Noida to be closed tomorrow, July 14, following severe rainfall alert in the region by the IMD (India Meteorological Department).
