Calcutta University waived the fees of undergraduate courses run by two institutes and has waived fees for all postgraduate courses for the academic year 2021-22. The fees have been waived by the university in view of the financial difficulties faced by the families of many students during the covid-19 pandemic. Issuing a notification, the university also said that the final year students need not pay their dues to collect their mark sheets.

This is what the notification says:

The notification, undersigned by the Executive Registrar Debasis Das, said, "It is for the information of all concerned that in view of the current pandemic situation, the University has waived off all fees such as admission fees, tuition fees, and examination fees of students (PG and University UG students) for the academic year 2021. At the same time, it has been decided that it is not required for the students to pay fees for collecting the mark sheets and grade sheets of different semester examinations. “

Sonali Chakraborty Bandyopadhyay, the vice-chancellor of the 164-year-old university, said the decision was taken in the interest of students. She said "we want to be on their side. We want to ensure that their studies are not affected in any way due to the pandemic. ”

When asked about other undergraduate courses, she said affiliated colleges are run by their own governing body and the university cannot take any such decision for them.

The decision was taken in view of the financial constraints of students and their families

She explained that only two undergraduate programs B.Tech and Home Science are directly run by the CU on the campus. Students who have enrolled for these courses will also get the benefit of fee waiver. "She said that according to the institute, this decision has been taken in view of the financial constraints of students and their families during the pandemic.

SFI appreciated the university's initiative

On the other hand, the Students Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPM, welcomed the university's move and said, "In the last one and a half years, many families have faced a financial crunch. This decision will be somewhat helpful to them. ”
