Informing about the same, Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said that the announcement was made after consultation with the chairman of the Standing Committee of the IIT Council and directors of IITs.
“It gives me immense pleasure to announce that our IITs are not increasing tuition fee for the academic year 20-21 for any of their courses,” the minister was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
The Ministry had to take this decision as the students in the country had to face inconvenience due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
"After consultation with the chairman of the Standing Committee of the IIT Council and directors of IITs, it has been decided that these institutes will not increase the tuition fee for academic year 2020-21 for any course," the HRD minister said.
"In case of the IIITs, it has been decided that for those which are centrally-funded, the standard 10-per cent hike in the tuition fee for undergraduate programmes will not be implemented this year. I have also requested them not to increase the fee for other courses," he said.
"On similar lines, I have requested the IIITs run in the public-private partnership mode not to increase the tuition fee for the coming academic year for any of their courses," Pokhriyal added.
Earlier this month, the HRD minister had also ordered private schools to revise annual fee hike amid the Coronavirus lockdown.
The minister asserted that it came to his notice by many parents from all across the country that the schools even in this time of crisis are determined to increase their annual fee.
The Union HRD Minister also stated that a lot of schools were also demanding the parents to deposit the school fee for three months together. He urged all the schools to join hands in the fight against corona and re-consider their decision.
