Class 12 Board Exams: Becoming a Doctor is a career aspiration every child nurtures during childhood. Some go on to choose Science after Class 10th with Biology, Chemistry and Physics to pursue a career in medical science. However, the Science (PCB) stream is not just limited to becoming a doctor as there are many other career options available for students after Class 12th. Let’s delve one by one:

An MBBS doctor or BDS dentist is the most common career goal for medical students. A lot of effort goes into preparing for National level entrance exams for medical colleges like NEET. If you seriously foster the ambition to become a doctor then you must put diligent hours every single day preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and claim a seat for MBBS or BDS. However, medical education is expensive and not everyone can afford it.

Apart from MBBS and BDS, other options available for medical students are to pursue Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) or Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS).

Another popular choice of medical students is B.Sc Nursing and successful candidates become Registered Nurses (RN). The demand for RNs is high in India as well as abroad. B.Pharma is a course that students can take after Class 12th to pursue a career in the pharmaceuticals and healthcare sector.

For those who have a soft corner for animals, a course in Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry i.e. B.V.Sc. & A.H. is best suited. If zoology is your forte, then special programmes can pave way for becoming animal breeder, zoo curator, conservationist, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife biologist, or a researcher.

Radiology is another arena which is flourishing, and so are other paramedical avenues. PCB students can enrol in B.Sc in paramedical courses like Anaesthesia Technology, Operation Theatre Technology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Dialysis Technology, and the likes or even go for Diplomas in these specializations.

Medical students can also explore the less picked options like B.Sc in Audiology or go in for BASLP (Bachelor of Audiology Speech Language Pathology) to chalk out a promising career in the long run. These courses are highly career driven and there are a plethora of jobs available for skilled candidates.

Bachelor of Physiotherapy aka BPT is yet another option for medical students to serve the ailing and stay fit themselves with exercising and movement of muscles through the day. Apart from various professional opportunities listed above, one can always choose to pursue B.Sc in a subject of choice, do a Masters and appear for UGC NET to qualify for Professor posts or enrol in B.Ed courses to become Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs).
