Artificial Intelligence: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) may soon introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an elective subject for Classes 8th, 9th and 10th in over 20,000 schools that come under its ambit. We are living in an era where the future we thought of, is happening right now. Where computers have been programmed with Artificial Intelligence to take decisions on our behalf, children playing games with computers as their opponents, Google Home/Alexa personal assistants telling homemakers when the next electricity bill is due or which type of music is best suited for their current mood; job portals picking resumes to lessen burden of talent acquisition teams and on the other hand showing most suitable jobs to job seekers; cars being driven by AI and not by humans, and rovers marching past mars to explore unknown terrains, and so on.

To acquaint students at an age when curiosity is at peak and the time is just right to pick subjects that’ll define their career, the Central Board of Secondary Education seems like making the right move at the right time. CBSE will make Artificial Intelligence as a skill subject that would be available under the vocational subjects list.

The concept of AI as an elective subject was ideated at a CBSE meeting with the government’s think tank NITI Aayog, post which CBSE is building a roadmap of how it would introduce AI to Classes 8, 9, 10 and set the stage of technological advancement in a country that is already one of the biggest software and technical services exporter in the world.

“Syllabus for the new subject would be drafted for all the three classes. If required, the board will also help in the capacity building of schools for the teaching-learning of the new subject from the next academic session,” stated a CBSE official privy to this development.
