CBSE Class 10 Board Exam: In a massive relief to student afraid of Mathematics, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a circular announcing two levels of paper for students of Class X for different needs from 2020 onwards. Accepting the unrealistic stress the subject can have on students who do not wish to further pursue the subject, CBSE has decided to introduce a Basic and a Standard Mathematics for Class X students for CBSE Board Examinations 2020. In a circular issued by the board on Friday CBSE shared its plan to test the students on Mathematics Basic and Mathematics Standard. The present level and curriculum of mathematics would continue to remain the same.

Students who fail or get a compartment in Mathematics-Standard exam will have the option to appear for compartment exam in any of the two levels. “The syllabus, classroom teaching and internal assessment for both the levels of examination would remain the same; so that the students get an opportunity to study the whole range of topics throughout the year and are able to decide upon the level of Board examination depending upon their aptitude and abilities,” the CBSE official circular read.

“A student who qualifies the Mathematics-Basic, shall be given an option to appear in Mathematics-Standard at the time of Compartment exams as per norms of the Board, in case he/she changes his/her mind to pursue Mathematics at Senior Secondary level,” the circular said.

However, it should be kept in mind that those students who appear for the exam with Basic-level will not be considered for pursuing mathematics at the higher education level.

For students who want to pursue maths in higher education, Mathematics-Standard will remain as their qualifying exam. The student will have the right to choose between the two levels and they will have to submit their choice in the list of candidates (LoC) before the commencement of exam to the Board.
