A mahapanchayat in Delhi’s Chhatarpur turned into a scene of fisticuffs when a woman started raining blows with her sandal on a man who seemingly tried to push her away from the microphone. The mahapanchayat had been organised by Hindu Ekta Manch as a memorial for Shraddha Walkar, who was allegedly strangled and then cut into 35 pieces by her live-in partner Aftab Poonawala on May 16.

The woman, who identified herself as Babita, later told mediapersons that her daughter has been missing for five days and the police is not ready to listen to her. “I have been making rounds of the police stations for five days but no one is ready to listen to me. They [influential people] bribe the police so the cops attend to them even on phone. But my grievances go unheard.”

She said her husband is bedridden with a tumour. “Even he has pleaded with the cops, but in vain.”

“These people are organising ‘Beti Bachao’ programmes. But who will save our daughters? How will we save our daughters when predators disguised as netas roam about freely,” she asked.

Babita got up on stage and took the microphone to air her grievances to the crowd. She said: “Be it BJP, be it any other party… it doesn’t make a difference… I have been making rounds of the police station for five days in vain.” It was at this point that she took off her sandal and started hitting a man who tried to push her away from the stage.

Later, the organisers made an announcement from the stage, clarifying that it was a domestic matter between a woman and her husband. The organisers said that the woman was agitated as her daughter was missing. "The matter is being investigated by the police. The woman is doing everything to find her daughter," the announcer said.
