A 73-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh's Noida died of possible cardiac arrest on Thursday after a lift at a housing complex plunged from the eighth floor. The incident took place at Paras Tierra Society in Sector 137.

A police official told PTI that the lift did not hit the ground but got caught between some of the middle floors of the building. The deceased was identified as Sushila Devi, who was alone in the lift when the incident happened.

The woman was on the eighth floor when she pressed the lift button to go down. However, someone from an upper floor had already called the lift due to which it was going up when she entered, reported news agency PTI.

A police official in a statement said, "Today, a woman going in the lift fainted due to the breaking of the lift wire in Paras Tierra Society in Sector 137, under Police Station Sector 142 area. The woman was alone in the lift. She was admitted to Felix Hospital but died during treatment."

Following the incident, the woman was rushed to Felix Hospital, where she died an hour later.

A doctor at the hospital told PTI that the woman had injuries on the back of her head and some abrasions on her elbows, which appears to have been caused due to the fall of the lift.

"There was no pulse and her eyelids were dilated when she was brought to the hospital, suggesting a possible cardiac arrest because of the suddenness of the event," the doctor said. He said multiple attempts were made to revive the patient but were unsuccessful.

Hundreds of residents of Paras Tierra society held a protest against the failure of the management over smooth functioning of common services such as lifts.

Additional DCP (Central Noida) Rajiv Dixit told PTI, "If the family gives a complaint, an FIR will be lodged immediately and legal action taken accordingly."

While talking about the protest, he said, "There is no law and order issue. The protesters are being pacified. It's a civic issue and if an FIR is lodged, then the police will take action accordingly."

As per a communication shared on society residents' WhatsApp group, another lift in one of the towers of Paras Tierra had a free fall earlier on Thursday but it was empty at the time of the incident.
