Following two recent murder incidents in the national capital, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal slammed the Centre for the degrading situation of law and order in Delhi. While criticising the authorities, she remarked that "no one is safe in Delhi." A 19-year-old was murdered in Delhi University South Campus on Sunday for trying to stop a fellow student from harassing his girlfriend after in a separate incident, two women were shot dead in RK Puram area. Maliwal said that the DCW will be issuing notices to authorities regarding these murders.
While talking to the news agency ANI, she said, "Law & order situation in Delhi has completely crumbled. Nobody is safe in Delhi, be it the rich or the poor, be it a resident of a posh locality or slum. A 19-year-old DU student stood outside his college with his female friend, a few people molested her. The boy attempted to save her but he was stabbed to death. Elsewhere, two women are shot dead. What is going on? Such bad condition of law and order?"
She further remarked, "The area where the boy was murdered is Delhi University's college area. It is a very high-profile area. Students from across the country come to study there and even they are not safe? Is no one afraid of law and governance anymore? I would like to ask the Centre when will it end its long silence over women's safety. Why isn't the Delhi Police being accountable? Why their resources are not being increased?"
Maliwal stressed that the Centre must work with the Delhi government to immediately resolve these issues and improve the situation of law and order.
She further commented that if the law and order situation doesn't improve, Delhiites will start leaving the national capital to relocate to a safer place.
Speaking to news agency PTI, Maliwal said that the DCW will be issuing notices to the concerned authorities over the recent murders.
"The Centre will have to wake up from its slumber over the issue of women's safety," she remarked.
Two accused were arrested in the case of Delhi University student's killing while police have nabbed five persons in connection with the double murder that took place in RK Puram area.
