A man was apprehended after allegedly attempting to strangle a woman and stealing her purse and phone as she walked along a secluded street in Dwarka, southwest Delhi, news agency PTI reported citing officials on Monday (January 8).
The officials said that the incident took place around 6:30 AM on January 6 in the Uttam Nagar locality, as per the PTI report.
Responding to a complaint lodged by the victim, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Harsha Vardhan stated that a specialised team was assembled to track down the perpetrator. Utilising CCTV footage from the vicinity, the team successfully apprehended the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Shiv Kumar from Chanakyapuri.
News agency ANI posted CCTV footage capturing the incident garnered attention on social media platforms, displaying Kumar trailing the victim before attacking her. Following the attempted strangulation, he seized her belongings and made a swift escape, as can be seen in the video.

Further inquiries revealed that Kumar has a history of involvement in six previous criminal cases, the DCP said, according to the report.
In December of last year, days after two employees of a businessman were robbed of Rs 90 lakh at gunpoint in central Delhi's Daryaganj, six people were arrested and a juvenile was apprehended in the case. The heist was masterminded by one of the businessman's employees, who needed money to pay off his debts, and his brother-in-law, according to the Times of India, citing police.
According to Sanjay Kumar Sain, deputy commissioner of police (central), the arrest occurred after an incident reported on December 13 at around 9.13 pm, the report stated.
During the investigation, one of the employees, Anil Tyagi, told cops that he and another employee, Raja, had come to Ansari Road to collect cash on behalf of their employer, a businessman, the report continued.
