The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heat wave warning for Delhi-NCR and surrounding areas for Monday (May 22). The maximum temperature in parts of Delhi surpassed 45 degrees Celsius on Sunday, with Najafgarh recording the highest at 46.3 degrees Celsius, according to the Met Department.
According to the Met Office, Narela and Pitampura observatories recorded 45 degrees Celsius, Ayanagar and Ridge observatories recorded 44 degrees Celsius, and Palam observatories recorded 43.8 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature at Safdarjung Observatory was 42.9 degrees Celsius, three degrees higher than the season's average. In the afternoon, there was less traffic on the roads, and the normally crowded boulevards appeared deserted.
According to the report, relative humidity levels on Sunday ranged between 25% and 74%.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the nighttime temperature had dropped three degrees Celsius to 24 degrees Celsius.
On Monday, the weather service predicts partly cloudy skies and heatwave conditions in isolated areas. It also predicts strong surface winds reaching speeds of 25-35 km/h during the day.
The high and low temperatures are expected to be 43 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.
IMD ALERTS SEVERAL UTTAR PRADESH DISTRICTS OF HEAT WAVE ATTACK:
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for 18 districts in Uttar Pradesh for the next 48 hours (Sunday and Monday), news agency IANS reported citing an official from the department. According to the IMD, the daytime temperature in these areas will exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Banda, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Mathura, Agra, Firozabad, Etawah, Auraiya, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jhansi, Lalitpur, and the surrounding areas will be affected by the heatwave.
Mohd Danish, in charge of the Lucknow Met office, stated that heat wave conditions prevailed in 12 of the 18 districts mentioned above on Saturday as well.
A heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature is 40 degrees Celsius or higher, or when the temperature remains 4.5 degrees above normal for two days in a row. On Saturday, the daytime temperature in Uttar Pradesh districts rose by 3.5 degrees Celsius above normal.
