New Delhi: A tragic incident took place on Wednesday as a 65-year-old woman lost her life after being hit by a car driven by her neighbour in east Delhi's Geeta Colony, according to police.

The incident took place around 9 am when the victim, identified as Janaki Kumari, was sweeping outside her house. The car, driven by Muku Rathore, hit her, causing severe injuries, reported news agency PTI.

CCTV footage captured the moment in which Janaki could be seen being tossed in the air after she was hit by the car, an officer said. Rathore was accompanied by his two sisters in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Following the collision, Rathore and his sisters stepped out of the car to check on Janaki, as seen in the 47-second CCTV video clip, as per the PTI report.

Police said Janaki's family members and other neighbours gathered at the spot and the woman was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead.

Rathore fled from the scene after the accident but was apprehended by the police later in the evening, police said.

Investigations revealed that Rathore had recently learned to drive. In the morning, he lost control of the vehicle on his way back from a market with his sisters, leading to the tragic accident, a police officer said, the PTI report added.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim's son, Tarun Bakshi, Rathore has been booked under IPC sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence). Additionally, Rathore has been fined under the Motor Vehicles Act for driving without a valid license, while the car owner has been penalized for allowing an unauthorized person to drive the vehicle.

Janaki Kumari is survived by her husband, son, and two daughters. Her family members are demanding strict punishment for Rathore in light of the tragic incident, reported PTI.
