New Delhi: A demolition drive was carried out on Tuesday at Sunder Nursery in southeast Delhi's Nizamuddin area amid heavy deployment of police, officials said.
According to a police officer, the drive was carried out peacefully, reported news agency PTI.
Jangpura MLA Praveen Kumar said, "The demolition (of jhuggis at Sunder Nursery) was ordered by the High Court earlier, but 216 jhuggis at Sunder Nursery are registered under DUSIB (Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board). When the High Court was apprised about this, the court ordered an interim stay on this demolition drive till 10:30 am tomorrow."
A resident told PTI, "PM said 'jahan jhuggi wahan makan'. If you are demolishing, then give us a roof. We are not objecting to this (anti-encroachment), but give us some time so that we can make some arrangement."
Another resident Chand Abbasi, who has lived there for the past 25 years, told PTI that they do not have any place to go now.
"We were living here for the last 25 years. We are worried as our kids have exams and their future is at stake. We have no place to go neither they have provided us any shelter," Abbasi said.
Another resident Moin said that he lost his job on Tuesday, reported PTI.
"I had gone for my job when I got to know about the demolition. I came home without informing anyone at my office and they have sacked me. We just wanted from the authorities that they should have given us time before this demolition being carried out," he said.
The residents claimed that over 10 shanties were demolished, reported PTI.
