After the death of the man who reportedly fell into a 40-foot-deep Delhi Jal Board (DJB) borewell, the police on Sunday registered a first information report (FIR) at Vikaspuri Police Station, news agency ANI reported. The FIR has been filled under Section 304(A) of the IPC (Causing death by negligence), the police stated, adding that further investigation in the case is underway.
According to police, a security guard at the Keshopur Jal Board office called police and reported the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning. Following the incident, local police and firefighters arrived on the location, and later the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was dispatched. NDRF personnel then started the rescue operations. First, two earthmovers were brought in to dig around the borewell, while another equipment was used to construct a parallel pit two to three feet away. Life detectors and cameras were placed inside the hole to see if the man was still alive.
Hours after, NDRF personnel dropped a rope with metal hooks attached inside the hole to pull out the body. After taking out the body, it was sent to the hospital where the man was declared dead.
Following the incident, Delhi Minister Atishi on Sunday called for a prompt investigation into the Keshopur borewell incident and directed Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to take strict action against the responsible officers.
On Sunday, the minister released an official statement emphasising the need of swiftly welding and sealing all abandoned borewells, both government and private. The Office of the Minister requires the Chief Secretary to report compliance within 48 hours.
