The Delhi Police apprehended a 24-year-old Uber auto-rickshaw driver on Friday for allegedly sexually abusing a female journalist during a journey in southeast Delhi, news agency PTI reported.
The journalist, a Bharat Nagar resident, filed a complaint at the New Friends Colony police station on Thursday night, according to the police.
She accused Uber driver Vinod Kumar Yadav of indecent behaviour and lascivious looking as she was travelling from New Friends Colony to Malviya Nagar about 4.40 p.m. on Wednesday.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Rajesh Deo, a case has been recorded under section 509 of the IPC (word, gesture, or act designed to offend the modesty of a lady) and an inquiry has been launched.
The woman recounted her incident on Twitter.
The Delhi Commission for Women said it received a complaint and issued a notice to the city police and the cab aggregator company.
The women's panel has requested a report on actions taken by March 6. In its warning to Uber, the panel requested information on the procedures taken to prevent such events from occurring in the future, as well as if the accused vehicle driver had been vetted by police.
Earlier, while speaking with ABP Live, the victim woman said the driver made her "uncomfortable", and that the Uber 'safety feature' did not work.
"I took an auto-rickshaw from New Friends Colony to a friend's place in Malviya nagar. During the ride, I noticed the driver was staring at me through the side mirrors, precisely at my breasts. I became uncomfortable and I shifted a bit towards the right and wasn't visible in the left side mirror. He then started looking into the right side of the mirror. I then shifted to the extreme left and wasn't visible in any of the mirrors. He then started looking back again and again..."
