Delhi: 2 Children Among 4 Dead After Smoke From Angeethi Fills Their Room, Police Say

Another case of asphyxiation due to angeethi's smoke reported in Delhi's Alipur killed four family members including 2 children.

In another shocking incident reported on Sunday morning from Delhi's Alipur, four people, including two children, allegedly died due to asphyxiation after the smoke from a coal brazier (angeethi) filled their room while they were asleep. The Delhi Police informed that samples of 'angeethi' have been collected as an investigation has been launched into the incident, news agency ANI reported.

B. Bharat Reddy, Additional DCP (Outer North) while talking about the incident, said,"... As per the preliminary investigation, 2 adults and 2 children have died. A forensic team has been called, samples of angeethi have been collected. It is suspected that they died due to suffocation. Probe from every angle is underway."

He said that his team had received a PCR call at 6:30 a.m. in the morning informing about four people who are unconscious and cannot move. When the police reached the location, they found an angeethi burning, based on which it was deduced that the cause of the family's death was asphyxiation. The investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the death is still underway.

A similar case happened on Tuesday in Amroha, in Allipur Bhud village, Uttar Pradesh, where five members of a family died of suspected asphyxiation. The room was filled with angeethi's smoke, which choked the people sleeping to death.

The villagers had to break open their house's door to get in when they noticed no one had come out of the house since Monday night. On entering, they found seven people lying unconscious and were immediately rushed to the hospital. Five of them were declared brought dead and two were hospitalised.

Another incident happened on Wednesday morning in Dwarka Sector 23, where a couple lit a coal brazier (angeethi) to beat the cold. The couple died of suspected asphyxiation after the angeethi's smoke filled their room. Their two-month-old baby, however, survived the deadly incident. 

The incident was discovered when the deceased man's younger brother came to wake him up and heard the child's frantic crying. On not receiving any response from inside upon knocking, he called the neighbours who helped him break the window to get in. It was only after they entered that it was found that the couple was lying unconscious on the floor. They quickly called the police and rushed the couple to the IGI hospital, where they were declared brought dead.
