New Delhi: On the second day of the farmers' Delhi Chalo march, traffic flowed without hindrance at the Ghazipur border with Uttar Pradesh, but it came to a standstill at the Singhu and Tikri borders with Haryana. The streets of New Delhi witnessed a significant deployment of security personnel, with barricades strategically placed to regulate movement, both in central Delhi and at the border points with Haryana.
Delhi Traffic police issued an Advisory, stating that the Singhu border on NH-44 is inaccessible for traffic urging the commuters to follow the advisory for diversions and alternative routes.
Despite the heightened security measures, the NH-9 and NH-24 connecting Delhi with Ghaziabad, Noida, and Meerut observed uninterrupted vehicular movement throughout the day. As per PTI, However, challenges persisted, particularly on the DND Flyway, where traffic congestion was reported on both carriageways.
Heavy Traffic On DND Highway
Earlier, the Delhi Police said in a post on ‘X’, "Due to the deployment of picket/checking on DND Flyway, traffic is heavy on both the carriageways of the DND Flyway. Commuters from Noida to Delhi and vice-versa are advised to take alternative routes like Chilla Border route."
At the city's border points—Ghazipur, Singhu, and Tikri—multiple layers of barricades, concrete blocks, iron nails, and container walls were installed to deter the advancing farmers' march, and a section of road in a village near the Singhu border was dug up, reported PTI.
According to PTI, Saksham Mishra, a resident of east Delhi, said, "There was no restriction on traffic movement on the Delhi-Meerut expressway. I went to a hospital in Indirapuram via the Delhi-Meerut expressway and there were no restrictions. Security is, however, high at the border".
As per PTI, Farmers demanding a law on minimum support price are marching towards Delhi after a meeting with a team of Union ministers over their demands remained inconclusive. Beyond MSP assurances, Faremers are rallying for the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations, pensions for farmers and laborers, debt waivers, and justice for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
