Delhi Minister Atishi has called for a prompt investigation into the Keshopur borewell incident and directed Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to take decisive action against the responsible officers. On Sunday, the minister issued an official statement emphasising the importance of promptly welding and sealing all government and private abandoned borewells. The Office of the Minister requires the Chief Secretary to report compliance within 48 hours.
Earlier on Sunday, Atishi visited the site near Keshopur Mandi, where an adult had fallen into a 40-foot-deep borewell on the Delhi Jal Board plant premises. Atishi clarified that the matter will be investigated by Delhi Police due to the age of the person involved, and promised that abandoned borewells throughout the capital would be sealed within the next two days. Strict orders have been issued to Delhi Jal Board officials to act against those responsible for the borewell's safety.
Addressing the press, Atishi highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, "This will be an issue of police investigation because this person is not a child, he is an adult. The intentionality and criminality behind this will be a matter of investigation. All the officials of the Delhi Jal Board have been given strict orders that action will be taken against whoever is responsible for the safety of this particular borewell. We have also ordered the sealing of all abandoned borewells in Delhi in the next 48 hours".
Providing details on the incident, Station Officer Ravinder Singh mentioned that the person could not have fallen into the borewell "on his own". The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team, led by Inspector-in-charge Veer Pratap Singh, initiated rescue operations by digging a parallel borewell. The entire rescue operation is anticipated to last seven to eight hours.
A PCR call was received by the Vikaspuri police station reporting the incident inside the Keshopur Jal Board plant. However, identity and other details about the person who fell into the borewell are currently unavailable.
