New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's wife Sunita Kejriwal has been summoned by a Delhi court in a case alleging that she got herself enrolled in the voters list of two assembly constituencies. The constituencies in question are Sahibabad in Uttar Pradesh and Chandni Chowk in Delhi, reported PTI.
Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Harish Khurana, who is the complainant in the case, has alleged that the chief minister's wife has violated the provisions of the Representation of the People (RP) Act. As per the act, no person can be registered in more than one constituency.
Metropolitan Magistrate Arjinder Kaur of the Tis Hazari court summoned the chief minister's wife as an accused on November 18.
“After considering the testimony of complainant and other witnesses, this Court is of the considered opinion that prima facie case is made out against accused person namely Sunita Kejriwal, W/o Arvind Kejriwal, for the alleged commission of the offences punishable under section 31 of the Representation of Peoples Act, 1950. Hence, the accused be summoned accordingly,” the judge said in an order passed on August 29.
The offence attracts a maximum punishment of imprisonment for two years.
Khurana in a complaint filled in 2019 claimed that Sunita Kejriwal was registered as a voter on the electoral rolls of Sahibabad assembly constituency (parliamentary constituency Ghaziabad), UP, and also Chandni Chowk assembly constituency in Delhi, which was in violation of Section 17 of the RP Act.
"I had filed this application in 2019… being registered as a voter in Delhis Chandni Chowk and Ghaziabad’s Sahibabad is illegal," Indian Express quoted Khurana as saying.
"Arvind Kejriwal and his wife have both been IRS officers… it is unforgivable for them to commit such an offence because they know that One Nation and One Voter ID card is under implementation in the country," he added.
Khurana claimed she was liable to be punished for the offences under Section 31 of the Act which deals with making false declarations.
