Delhi Airport Roof Collapses After Heavy Rain, Six Injured

Four people were injured in Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 when a portion of the roof collapsed after heavy rainfall. Visuals from the spot showed vehicles trapped beneath the debris.

At least six people were injured after a portion of the roof collapsed at terminal-1 of the Delhi airport amid the early morning rain in the city. Three fire tenders were rushed to the spot, according to an official from Delhi Fire Services. The incident occurred around Around 5.30 AM. All departures from Terminal-1 have been suspended following the incident.

While the initial count of injured persons was four, Fire Director Atul Garg later said that six were injured in the incident. There has been no report of any death yet.

Visuals from the spot showed several cars trapped under the debris. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital. Rescue operations are still on.

Soon after the incident, Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said that he was monitoring the situation. "Personally monitoring the roof collapse incident at T1 Delhi Airport. First responders are working at site. Also advised the airlines to assist all affected passengers at T1. The injured have been evacuated to hospital. Rescue operations are still ongoing," he posted on X.

A Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) spokesperson told news agency ANI: "Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old Departure forecourt of Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 collapsed around 5 AM. There are injuries reported, and emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected. As a result of this incident, all departures from Terminal 1 are temporarily suspended, and check-in counters are closed as a safety measure. We sincerely regret this disruption and apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Heavy Rain In Delhi

The heavy downpour in Delhi continued throughout the morning, flooding several roads in the national capital. The waterlogging resulted in massive traffic snarls. Multiple vehicles were seen submerged under the water.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the monsoon to arrive in Delhi by June 30, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heatwave.
