A day after the Supreme Court said that schemes to combat air pollution in Delhi-NCR, like the odd-even for vehicles, are mere optics, and directed the Aam Aadmi Party led Delhi government to take concrete action in this regard, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi said that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is taking steps to stop construction activities and open burning of garbage in the capital.
"MCD has taken steps to tackle air pollution in Delhi. The biggest sources of air pollution are construction activities and open burning of garbage. Several teams of MCD are working in the city to make sure open burning of garbage does not happen in the city," said Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi on Wednesday, as reported by ANI.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Supreme Court slammed the Delhi government and asked it to fix the smog tower in Delhi, and ensure that municipal solid waste is not burnt in the open.
While hearing the matter of air pollution in Delhi, the Division Bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia said, "Delhi can't be made to go through this year after year."
Justice Kaul also expressed his dismay at the growing number of children in Delhi-NCR going through health issues.
The apex court further said that efforts should be made to provide an alternative solution to stubble burning and suggsted giving subsidies to farmers by the Centre so that the farmers could acquire the required facilities to curb farm fires.
