All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi has achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully completing an awake brain surgery on a 5-year-old girl with a left perisylvian intraaxial brain tumor, using the Awake Craniotomy (Conscious Sedation technique). With this feat, she has become the youngest child globally to undergo such a medical procedure, news agency ANI reported. An official statement from AIIMS revealed the masterful collaboration and assistance from the neuro-anesthesia and neuroradiology teams in delivering excellent-quality functional MRI brain studies.

It observed the exceptional cooperation of the young girl throughout the surgery and she remained in stable condition both at the conclusion and in the postoperative period, reported ANI.

Basically, a neurosurgical procedure known as an Awake Craniotomy enables a surgeon to remove a brain tumor from a patient while they are conscious and able to talk to the operative team, preventing brain damage. During this surgery, the Cortical mapping technique is used by neurosurgeons to map out important regions of the "eloquent brain" that must remain undisturbed during tumor removal. It allows real-time feedback from the patient, enhancing the precision of the procedure and reducing the risk of complications.

In this, a person talks with a surgeon and the surgical team as part of the operation. The surgical team also ensures the individual feels comfortable and experiences no pain throughout the procedure.

Initially, this surgery was used for the surgical treatment of epilepsy but is now most commonly performed for the resection of tumors. It allows the neurosurgeon to maximize tumor resection while preserving neurological function, ANI's report mentioned.

People may find the concept of awake brain surgery concerning or frightening. As a result, the surgical team gives advice and assists a patient in getting ready for surgery in advance. Additionally, they ensure the utmost comfort throughout the procedure. Awake brain surgery as a surgical procedure is generally safe and effective.
