An 85-year-old woman was allegedly raped in her house by a neighbour at Hafizganj in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly on Monday, and died after the assault. The accused has been identified as a 35-year-old named Rakesh, who allegedly barged into the house on Monday and locked the door before attacking the woman.

Senior Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya told PTI that the woman lived alone after the death of her husband and son. Her daughter-in-law lived with the victim’s brother and sister-in-law.

The daughter-in-law visited the house at 1 pm, and walked in on Rakesh raping her mother-in-law, Arya said.

When the daughter-in-law raised the alarm, the accused escaped. The family immediately contacted the police. However, the victim had died by then.

The police reached the site and arrested the accused, according to PTI. Arya said Rakesh, described as an alcoholic, was being interrogated. Meanwhile, an autopsy is currently being conducted on the victim.

According to The Times Of India, the man was charged under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 333 (house trespass with intent to hurt) and 66 (rape causing death or persistent vegetative state).

In an X post, Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) Mukesh Chandra Mishra said the SHO of Hafizganj received the complaint about the crime. “We've arrested the accused and are questioning him. The body was sent for autopsy and a report is awaited," he added.

He said people in the neighbourhood were angry but the situation was under control.
