A lawyer in Punjab’s Rupnagar was arrested on Saturday after he allegedly tortured and mercilessly thrashed his old mother, said the police, adding that a case has been registered against him along with his wife and son.
"Ankur Varma was arrested yesterday and was presented before the court. The court sent him on a one-day police remand," said Station House Officer Pawan Kumar.
In a video that has been widely shared on social media Asha Rani’s grandson could be seen pouring water on her mattress and then complaining about his grandmother wetting the bed to his parents. Ankur and his wife, Sudha are seen coming to see after which the lawyer could be seen thrashing his mother and slapping her while the helpless old lady lay flat on the bed.
Ankur could be seen alternating between slapping her on the face and beating her on the back. Some time later Sudha is seen saying something to Asha Rani after which Ankur returns and holds his mother by the hair and jolts her head repeatedly while slapping and punching him.
Ankur could also be seen apparently shouting at his mother in the horrific video.

Asha Rani, 73, stayed in Punjab’s Rupnagar with her son and daughter-in-law. Her husband recently passed away after suffering a heart attack after which she told her daughter Deepshikha, about Ankur and Sudha’s misbehaviour, according to an NDTV report.
The daughter managed to get hold of the footage from the CCTV camera installed in Asha Rani’s room after which she filed a complaint with the police. Based on her complaint a police team and some people from an NGO reached Asha Rani's house and rescued her on Saturday, the report added.
In a video shared by news agency ANI, Asha Rani was seen receiving treatment with the members of an NGO.
