New Delhi: A decomposed body of a woman was found partially buried behind the locked bungalow of a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator at a village in Maharashtra's Satara district.

Former MLC Kanta Nalawade's family members found the body while cleaning the premises of the bungalow, where they stay only occasionally, news agency PTI reported police as saying on Saturday.

"The mutilated and decomposed body of a woman was found partially buried in the soil at the back side of the bungalow, which was locked. It was found by the members of the family when they arrived there on Friday and started cleaning it," a police official said, as quoted by PTI.

As per the official, the family members then informed the police, who launched a probe. The identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained, he added.

Satara district Superintendent of Police Sameer Shaikh said, "We have recovered the decomposed body of a woman from the bungalow premises. We are checking all possible angles in this matter. The identity of the deceased will be established soon and the probe is on."

In 2022, Maharashtra reported several such cases. In one such case reported in June, nine members of a family of two brothers were found dead in Maharashtra's Sangli district.

The Police suspected it to be a case of a suicide pact, while a preliminary probe suggested the duo had heavily borrowed money from various people.

The bodies were found in two different houses of the brothers, located 1.5km apart, in Mhaisal village in the western Maharashtra district, over 350km from the state capital Mumbai.

The deceased included two brothers - Popat Vanmore (56), Dr Manik Vanmore - their mother, wives, and four children and it was suspected that they might have consumed poisonous substances to end their lives.
