In Belagavi district, Karnataka, a mother and her daughter were assaulted by their neighbours on suspicion of engaging in prostitution. The attack occurred in the Vaddarawadi locality, within the jurisdiction of the Malamaruti police station.

According to the victim, who has been residing in the area for four years, neighbours barged into her home, dragged her and the woman outside, and physically assaulted them. The assailants alleged that strangers frequently visited her residence. During the assault, the woman’s clothes were torn in public, and the  act was recorded on mobile phones, as per a report on IANS.

She claimed that despite the severity of the attack, local police initially refused to register the complaint for two days. The woman said that she then approached the Police Commissioner of Belagavi city, submitting a petition that outlined her fears for her life.

Acting on the Commissioner’s directive, the local police finally registered a complaint against three individuals late Friday night, as reported by India Today. The case has been filed under Sections 115(2), 3(5), 331, 352, and 74 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act. Investigations are now underway, with authorities preparing to interrogate the accused.

This incident follows another episode from December 2023, where a 42-year-old woman in Belagavi was dragged out of her home, stripped naked, and tied to an electric pole. The attack was reportedly in retaliation for her son eloping with a girl from the village. The incident, occurring near the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha during the winter Assembly session, caused widespread outrage and embarrassment for the state government. Later, the police arrested seven accused concerning the incident. The accused were related to the girl's family. Karnataka Home Minister Parameshwara visited the victim and expressed his dismay. Later, he described the incident as unfortunate.
