A mother in Jharkhand’s Chatra district allegedly sold her baby boy soon after his birth, as per the police. Eleven people were arrested in connection with the case, including the mother of the newborn identified as Asha Devi.


As per news agency PTI, Chatra’s Deputy Commissioner Abu Imran received information regarding the incident. The police swung into action immediately and rescued the newborn from the Bokaro district within 24 hours, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Avinash Kumar said, as reported by PTI.


SDPO Kumar addressed a press conference on Thursday and informed that police seized Rs 1 lakh from Asha Devi.


It was revealed that her arrest led the police to a ‘Sahiya didi’, identified as Dimple Devi. Based on the information provided by Dimple Devi, police nabbed the other accused and rescued the baby from Bokaro, the officer said.


A couple from Badkagaon village in Hazaribag district struck deal with two brokers of Chatra and Bokaro for the newborn for Rs 4.5 lakh, he said, as reported by PTI.


The mother of the baby was given Rs 1 lakh and the rest of the amount, Rs 3.5 lakh was shared among the brokers, he added.


The SDPO said police arrested 11 people including the accused mother, Asha Devi.


A case was registered at the Chatra police station on the statement of the Deputy Superintendent of Sadar Hospital doctor Manish Lal.


This comes as in another shocking incident, a newborn child was allegedly killed by a policeman in Jharkhand's Giridih district when the police team had gone to the house for a non-bailable warrant for an accused.


Chief Minister Hemant Soren directed the police to launch an investigation into the matter.


FIR has been filed against six police officers, and five of them have been suspended, PTI reported.
