Maharashtra police has arrested a patient who allegedly attacked and stabbed a resident doctor with a knife in Maharastra's Yavatmal district on Thursday. Another doctor suffered an injury when he intervened to rescue his colleague.
Polie said that the patient is mentally unstable and had stabbed himself two days back.
"Accused Suraj Thakur was admitted at Yavatmal Medical College Hospital. The accused had stabbed himself two days ago. He's a mentally unstable person. While the doctor was on rounds, the accused attacked him with a knife. Accused arrested," ANI quoted Yavatmal SP as saying.
According to ANI, the incident happened in the Shri Vasantrao Naik Government Hospital when the two resident doctors were on rounds.
The doctors protested against the attack and have written a letter to the Deputy CM and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis apprising him of the incident.
"In view of the protest, residents of SVNGMC Yavatmal will stop all emergency and non-emergency services", the letter reads.
Pravin Dhage, BMC MARD President, told ANI," A patient attacked a resident doctor with a knife at Yavatmal Medical College Hospital. He was injured & is under treatment. This isn't the first incident, earlier also an MBBS student was attacked with a knife."
He added that the doctors have requested the state government to increase the security at the hospital but no step has been taken so far.
"We requested the state govt to increase security there but no steps taken so far. Doctors are protesting in wake of such attacks," he said, quoted ANI.
