New Delhi: In a tragic incident, a seven-year-old girl who went missing in a village was found dead in a field on Sunday, according to officials. The police suspect that she was strangled to death.

Senior Superintendent (SSP) Rajesh Kumar Singh said prima facie it appeared that the girl was strangulated to death. Family members of the girl, however, alleged that she was raped before being murdered, reported PTI.

According to the SSP, information was received at the Kotwali Dehat Police Station around 8.30 pm on Saturday that a seven-year-old girl was missing since 12 noon from her house in a village.

She had reportedly left her house around noon to play with friends but did not return, prompting her family to contact the authorities, as per the PTI report.

A search operation, aided by a dog squad, was launched immediately. The police followed the trail which led them to the mustard field near the village where the girl's body was found on Sunday.

In response to the incident, four investigative teams have been deployed to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The girl's body has been sent for post-mortem examination to gather more evidence and information, the PTI report added.
