The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal region. According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation that was present over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the north Tamil Nadu coast has shifted over south Tamil Nadu and its vicinity, at an altitude of 0.9 km above mean sea level.

Additionally, another cyclonic circulation, which was located over the southeast Arabian Sea off the Kerala coast, is now positioned over the Lakshadweep region and the adjoining southeast Arabian Sea, extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level.


The IMD’s tropical weather outlook for the next week (168 hours) also highlights significant weather activity over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. As of the latest observations on November 14, 2024, the cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal is positioned over south Tamil Nadu and nearby regions. 


"Scattered low and medium clouds with embedded intense to very intense convection lay over south Bay of Bengal and south Andaman sea. Scattered low and medium clouds with embedded moderate to intense convection lay over south parts of northwest Bay of Bengal & westcentral Bay of Bengal," IMD said.


For Friday, the IMD predicted light to moderate rainfall across several locations with thunderstorms and lightning expected in isolated areas over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Heavy rainfall is likely in isolated areas within the districts of Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore, as well as in the Karaikal region.


In Chennai, IMD said, "Moderate rain with thunderstorm & lightning is likely to occur in some areas."


IMD issued yellow alert to Alappuzha and Thrissur for Friday. In Thiruvananthapuram, IMD said, "Generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. Minimum temperature is most likely to be around 24°C."
